National Champions. How do they support the environment

About the report:

The fourth ranking of the largest Polish companies of key importance for the economy. This time the main topic of the report is the measures undertaken by entrepreneurs to protect the environment and combat the climate crisis. Achieving the goal of climate neutrality and halting the negative effects of environmental degradation requires the involvement of all public policies, all sectors of the economy and social groups. Companies aspiring to be the national champions should be leaders of change - boldly implementing "green" solutions and trying to limit the negative impact of their activities on the environment. The ranking was prepared on the basis of the proprietary index of national champions (NC index). It consists of the average score in four key categories: economy, industry, foreign and innovation. Additionally, the publication presents a special ranking of Green Champions. The report was prepared on the basis of data for 2019.

Key conclusions:

  • The winner of the 2021 edition of the ranking, as in the previous year, is PKN Orlen, which achieved the highest NC index in the history - 87 points.
  • PKN Orlen was followed by KGHM "Polska Miedź" (2nd place) and Asseco Poland (3rd place).
  • In the "Economy" category, KGHM and PGE triumphed ex aequo, in the "Sector" - PKN Orlen, while in the "International Presence" - Asseco Poland. There were also two winners in the "Innovation" category - Polpharma and Synthos.
  • In 2021, the status of the National Champion was achieved by a record number of companies - 13, which is four more than last year.
  • For the first time, there has been a significant change in the ownership structure of companies from the top 50 list of the National Champions. The number of privately-owned entrepreneurships increased by two to 28 at the expense of the state-owned companies which dropped to 22.
  • Selena FM won the special ranking of the Green Champions, ahead of Mlekovita and KGHM Polska Miedź S.A.
