The impact of Foreign Direct Investment. Contribution to the Polish economy in the past quarter century

About the report:

Analysis of the role of foreign investments in the development of the Polish economy. For the purposes of the report, data from the last 25 years were collected, the scale of foreign investments was shown, and how their dynamics changed in subsequent years is shown. The sectors of the economy that have benefited the most from their inflow were indicated and characterised. Moreover, the contribution of foreign investments to Poland's economic development is calculated and what Polish society has gained from the presence of foreign entities assessed.

Key conclusions:

  • The inflow of foreign direct investment (FDI) is one of the most important factors stimulating the economy.
  • The value of FDI in Poland at the end of 2017 exceeded PLN 712 billion.
  • The involvement of foreign capital has increased the productivity of companies with Polish capital several-fold and allowed for their rapid advancement in global value chains.
  • The inflow of foreign direct investment has increased Poland's economic potential by an average of 0.7 per cent. annually.
  • The inflow of FDI has had a positive effect on the labour market: wages increased by 8.9 per cent, employment by 8.5 per cent and income inequality fell by nearly 5 per cent.
