Analysis of the phenomenon of food waste. The report illustrates its scale, explains the institutional conditions and proposes practical recommendations for the food processing, trade and catering sectors. The report also presents good legal, financial and business practices in the area of reducing food waste, which contribute to minimising the negative impact on the environment.
Key conclusions:
- It is estimated that 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted annually in the world. In poor countries, most food is wasted at the production stage. The richer the country, the higher the percentage of food wasted further down the supply chain.
- In the European Union, 88 million tonnes are wasted annually (173 kg per person). EU citizens are aware that food waste should be fought primarily at the level of households, as they are responsible for the waste of around 53% of food products.
- The European Commission has estimated that by 2025 the phenomenon of food waste will be reduced by 30%, and by 2050 by 50%.
- According to Eurostat estimates from 2006, approximately 237 kg of food per person is wasted annually in Poland, the total value is EUR 14 billion.
- There are no systemic initiatives and regulations in Poland that could reduce the scale of food waste.
