Wawrzyniec Smoczyński Managing Director
Wawrzyniec Smoczyński manages Polityka Insight and leads its analytical team. He is the founder and creator of Polityka Insight. A former journalist, he previously served as foreign editor of the leading Polish weekly “Polityka”, where he covered international affairs and economics. Winner of the Kwiatkowski Award for economic writing (2010), the Polish Grand Press Award (2011) and the Woyciechowski Prize for outstanding journalism (2012). Open Society Fellow (2008), Marshall Memorial Fellow (2009), Munich Young Leader (2010), IMF Journalism Fellow (2011). Since 2017 Wawrzyniec Smoczyński serves as member of the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR). A graduate in Egyptology at the University of Warsaw, he also studied General Linguistics and Coptology at the Georg August University in Göttingen.
Łukasz Lipiński Director for Analysis
Łukasz Lipiński supervises the daily operations at Polityka Insight, edits analyses and publications. For 15 years, he had been working at the leading Polish daily “Gazeta Wyborcza”. He served as the head of the national news desk (2008-2012), foreign desk (2006-2008) and deputy head of economy desk (2001-2006). Apart from supervising journalists he was responsible for commissioning polls, managing coverage of general elections and other major events. Marshall Memorial Fellow 2004 and member of the selection committee since 2007. A law graduate from the University of Gdańsk.
Andrzej Bobiński Director for New Projects
Andrzej Bobiński oversees the business activities of Polityka Insight, developing new projects, in particular. Between 2013 and 2016, he headed the business department at Polityka Insight. Up to 2012, he had been the head of the External Relations department at Orange Polska, at the same time co-creating the Wrocław Global Forum as the director of the event’s secretariat. Between 2006 and 2009, he acted as the programme coordinator of the Centre for International Relations. He graduated from the University of Warsaw with a degree in Applied Linguistics.
Joanna Bekker Business Development Director
Joanna Bekker leads the Business Development Department at Polityka Insight. For eight years, she had been working at the European Parliament as an EPP Group’s Press Advisor and Spokesperson for the Polish delegation, among others. She also worked with the leading PR agencies in Poland.
Krzysztof Bolesta Director for Research
Economist by training, leads the research department at Polityka Insight. Between 2012-2015 he served as an advisor for energy and climate to the Polish Minister of Environment. Since 2004 he worked at the European Commission’s DG for Competition, where he assessed public aid programmes dealing with energy and environment protection. In 2008, he moved to the General Directorate for Energy, where he dealt with coal and oil markets, CSS technology, ETS and energy infrastructure. He launched his professional career in 2000 as a specialist for energy markets at the Office of the Committee for European Integration (UKIE), assisting Poland’s accession negotiations. An expert of the Energy Strategy Centre, author of numerous publications on public aid for the coal mining sector. He translated “Machiavelli in Brussels” into Polish.
Wojciech Szacki Senior Analyst for Political Affairs
Wojciech Szacki heads the political desk at Polityka Insight. He is in charge of the party coverage and maintains relations with PO and PiS politicians. He is also responsible for the daily political briefings. From 2002 to 2012, he was a journalist at “Gazeta Wyborcza”, where he followed party politics and public opinion polls. An author of news stories, features, op-eds and interviews. A law graduate from the University of Warsaw.
Adam Czerniak, PhD Chief Economist
Adam Czerniak specializes in macroeconomic research at Polityka Inisight. PhD in Economic Sciences and researcher at the Warsaw School of Economics (SGH). Up till 2012, he was an economist at Kredyt Bank’s Treasury Department. Before that, he worked with the World Bank, FOR Foundation and held a fellowship from the Ronald Coase Institute. He authored academic publications on functioning of the real estate market and institutional economics.
Joanna Popielawska Senior Analyst for European Affairs
Joanna Popielawska heads the European affairs desk at Polityka Insight. A graduate of European Affairs at Collegium Civitas in Warsaw. Between 2007 and 2013 she worked at the European Parliament, dealing with the internal market issues as well as constitutional and foreign affairs. She was an advisor to the Minister of Administration and Digitization. She also served as an advisor to Rafał Trzaskowski, former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, participating in preparations of Poland’s positions for the European Council meetings.
Leszek Baj Senior Business Analyst
As the head of Polityka Insight’s economic desk, Leszek Baj is responsible for monitoring the activities of ministries, economic institutions and companies. Previously, he worked as an economic journalist and later deputy head of business desk at “Gazeta Wyborcza”. In 2014, he was granted the Władysław Grabski Award by the national central bank NBP. He participated in the global consortium of investigative journalists, working on data leaks from tax havens (Swiss Leaks and Panama Papers). A graduate of the Warsaw School of Economics.
Robert Tomaszewski Senior Energy Analyst
Robert Tomaszewski is responsible for the energy and petroleum sector. A leading author of PI Energy, has been working at Polityka Insight since its launch in 2013. He graduated in International Relations from the University of Warsaw, he also completed postgraduate studies on the functioning of the energy market at the Warsaw School of Economics. A scholar of the Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago and Radboud University Nijmegen.
Piotr Sobolewski Senior Financial Sector Analyst
Piotr Sobolewski analyses financial sector developments at Polityka Insight . He was a journalist of leading Polish daily “Rzeczpospolita” as well as “Parkiet” newspaper and “Bloomberg Businessweek Polska”. A laureate of Marian Krzak Journalism Award for “skillful and reliable reporting on banking, financial and capital markets”. An MSc in Finance, Accounting and Insurances from the University of Warsaw.
Marek Świerczyński Senior Analyst for Security Affairs
Marek Świerczyński heads security desk at Polityka Insight. He has been covering defence tenders and international security issues throughout most of his 20-year career in journalism. Between 1997 and 2005 he worked at the Polish Section of the BBC World Service in Warsaw and London. From 2010 to 2015 he was the publisher of “Polska i Świat” magazine at TVN24 and a defence affairs commentator at TVN24BiŚ. He collaborated with the Jagiellonian University in Cracow, the Center for European Policy Analysis in Washington, DC, Atlantic Community in Berlin, Polish Institute of International Affairs and Poland's National Defence Academy. He studied law at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań.
Szymon Łajszczak Senior Analyst for Legal Affairs
Szymon Łajszczak heads the legal desk at Polityka Insight. He monitors the legislative processes, case-law and legal market. For many years, he had been analysing the legal environment of business and advising clients in highly regulated industries. He had been preparing them for changes in law and supporting in relations with public authorities. He specializes in administrative and public commercial law and combines business analysis with scientific work. He authored numerous publications on application of law, constitutional law, comparative law, administrative procedures, legal philosophy and philosophy of language. A law graduate and PhD candidate at the University of Warsaw.
Joanna Sawicka Political Affairs Analyst
Joanna Sawicka covers political parties at Polityka Insight. She maintains relations with the opposition, PO, PSL and the left, in particular. She prepares the daily political briefing, analyses data and follows local governments issues. A graduate of University of Warsaw, she holds MA degrees in History and Sociology.
Michał Zieliński Analyst for Digital Economy
Michał A. Zieliński covers digital in business and technology at Polityka Insight. Previously, he held posts of deputy chief of business desk and editor at “Gazeta Wyborcza”, being responsible for development and operational management of online economic section. He also worked as a reporter at “Rzeczpospolita” and TVN24 business desk, among others. He graduated in Journalism from the University of Warsaw (MA) and completed postgraduate studies in the field of central banking and monetary policy, led by PAN in cooperation with NBP.
Juliusz Skibicki Political Affairs Analyst
Juliusz Skibicki covers political parties at Polityka Insight. He maintains relations with the grouping of Paweł Kukiz, Nowoczesna and other smaller caucuses. He also prepares the daily political briefing. A University of Warsaw graduate, he holds degrees in Political Science (MA) and Local Government and Regional Policy (BA).
Jan Szyszko European Affairs Analyst
Jan Szyszko follows political developments in the EU member states and in Brussels. He graduated in European Interdisciplinary Studies from the College of Europe and in Geography and Political Sciences from Trinity College in Dublin and Charles University in Prague. He was an Intern at the European Investment Bank and a scholar at the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Maciej Czapluk Legal Affairs Analyst
Maciej Czapluk tracks the legislative process and analyses the impact of new laws, especially judiciary ones, on the state and regulatory environment of companies. He also monitors the situation in the Constitutional Tribunal and legislative as well as personal changes in Polish courts. He completed his law degree at the University of Warsaw and he has started his training as legal advisor.
Dominik Sipiński Transport and Infrastructure Analyst
Dominik Sipiński analyses transport and infrastructure sector at Polityka Insight. He is also a reporter for Ch-aviation.com. He was an editor in-chief of Pasazer.com, an aviation website, and cooperated with “Puls Biznesu” and “Air International”. He also covers foreign affairs and military conflicts for “Tygodnik Przegląd” and “New Internationalist”. He studied Media, Journalism and Globalisation at Danish Media and Journalism School and Aarhus University. He also graduated in War & Conflict Journalism from Swansea University, the European Studies from Maastricht University and participated in the journalism courses at BBC College of Journalism and Columbia University in New York.
Maciej Michalik Assistant to PI Research
Maciej Michalik assists the research team of Polityka Insight. He also prepares the daily economic press digest. He graduated in Law and European Diplomacy from the University of Wrocław.
Katarzyna Szajewska Project Manager
Katarzyna Szajewska is handling events and conferences organised by Polityka Insight. Previously, she worked at Res Publica Foundation, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education and the European Parliament. She graduated in International Relations from Collegium Civitas.
Marcin Bąba Editor, Project & Technology Manager
Marcin Bąba edits analyses, daily briefings and reports at Polityka Insight. He also supervises programmers’ work and is in charge of technological development of the service and new products. Between 2007 and 2010, he co-founded “Res Publica Nowa” and was a board member at Res Publica Foundation. He later cooperated with the National Library of Poland on modernisation and innovative projects. He is an editor of the website of the Faculty of Economic Sciences of the University of Warsaw. A historian of ideas and sociologist by education.
Julita Żylińska Editor
Julita Żylińska edits analyses, daily briefings, reports, and publications at Polityka Insight. For over eight years, she had been working at the Polish Press Agency (PAP) as a correspondent in Brussels and editor at the economic desk, among others. She had been employed at the press office of the Ministry of Economy and in the private sector. She graduated in Economics from the University of Warsaw (MA) and English Philology from the SWPS University (BA).
Annabelle Chapman, PhD Briefing Editor
Annabelle Chapman edits Polityka Insight's briefing in English. Her articles from Poland and Ukraine have featured in The Economist, Foreign Policy, Newsweek and the Financial Times, among others. She holds a master degree in Russian and East European Studies and a degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics, both from Oxford University. She obtained her PhD from the Oxford University as well.
Max Belina-Brzozowski Art Director
Max Belina-Brzozowski supervises the graphic and programming team, and develops online sales channels at Polityka Insight. For the past 12 years he had been designing and coordinating projects in advertising and marketing for i.a. Mastercard, PKP Intercity, Nivea (BDF), Sobieski Group, AIG/Lincoln, Liebrecht & wooD, Fashion House Group and Laura Ashley.
Justyna Nowak Graphic Designer
Justyna Nowak is responsible for a coherent visual identity of Polityka Insight. She specialises in design and printing layout. She also deals with the display of commissioned reports, infographics as well as the visual side of Polityka Insight events. She graduated in Graphics from Strzemiński Academy of Art in Łódź.
Maciej Kurczewski Front-end Developer
Maciej Kurczewski is a front-end developer. He draws on his long-term experience in programming and graphic design to implement digital projects at Polityka Insight. He also provides an in-house technological support for the Polityka Insight team.
Dagmara Bochyńska Sales Manager
Dagmara Bochyńska is responsible for subscription sales and client relations. Previously, she worked for the Noble Concierge and Polish Confederation Lewiatan, where she was in charge of individual sales and assisting the participants of the European Forum For New Ideas. She graduated from Collegium Civitas in Warsaw with a degree in International Relations. A scholar of the Complutense University of Madrid.
Michał Kiśluk Business Development Assistant
Michał Kiśluk deals with client relations at the business development team of Polityka Insight. Previously, he worked at Siemens and at the Ministry of the Interior where he served as an assistant to the Minister in political cabinet. He is a graduate from the University of Warsaw with degrees in Administration and Political Science.
Helena Skąpska Assistant to the Managing Director
Helena Skąpska is an assistant to Wawrzyniec Smoczyński. She is responsible for organising events, cooperation with the external partners and for the media contacts. She graduated in Management of Cultural Institutions, Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology from Jagiellonian University and Museology from the Institute of Art History of the University of Warsaw.
